Soon after the Ukrainian government announced that it has started accepting donations in Polkadot’s native token DOT, Polkadot co-founder Gavin Wood donated $5.6 million worth of DOT for war relief.

The government added Polkadot to the list after Wood promised to donate $5 million in DOT. It wrote in a post:

“The people of Ukraine fighting for our freedom are forever grateful to Gavin Wood @gavofyork for the generous donation of $5M of @Polkadot $DOT as promised publicly. Thank you from all of us here in Ukraine working for a peaceful future.”

Ukraine’s government was previously accepting contributions in Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Tether, but has now also added Polkadot. “More cryptocurrencies to be accepted soon,” the official Twitter account for Ukraine posted.

Gavin Wood, the founder of Ethereum and Polkadot, has donated 298,367 DOT to the address provided by the account. At the time of writing, the aforementioned amount roughly translates to US$5.6 million.

According to data by blockchain analytics firm Elliptic, Ukraine has raised more than $33.8 million in cryptocurrencies to counter Russia’s invasion of the country. Major cryptocurrency exchange Binance has pledged to donate $10 million, in addition to launching a crowd-funding campaign that has raised $6.8 million at press time.
